Clothing and shoes are the top sellers in e-commerce!

Germans love to shop online: 77 percent of Germany’s 65 million regular internet users over the age of ten buy goods and services online. That corresponds to 50 million online buyers.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (DESTATIS) in Wiesbaden, based on the latest results for 2018, people primarily buy clothing and shoes online (67%), followed by furniture, toys and other consumer goods (52%), then vacation accommodations (42%), event tickets (41%), and books and magazines (40%). Movies, videos and music (32%), medications (32%), computer software (30%), groceries (28%) and electronics (25%) are also often ordered online.

Money spent on online purchases

67 percent (44 million) of regular internet users purchased something online in the three months preceding the survey, in other words in the first quarter of 2018. This group of people was also asked how much money they spent on online purchases. According to their responses, nearly half (46%) spent between 100 and 500 euros on online purchases in the first quarter of 2018. About a quarter (26%) of the respondents spent 50 to 100 euros. Approximately twelve percent spent less than 50 euros online. Nine percent invested 500 to 1,000 euros. Five percent spent at least 1,000 euros, and around one percent could not estimate how much they had spent.
